Earthing Systems

The LPI Earthing System plays a vital role in safely dissipating currents to the ground, to prevent operational downtime and equipment failure in the event of a lightning strike. We work alongside our clients to design, supply, install and commission our earthing systems, by incorporating nationally and internationally recognised designs, including: EN 62305 – EN 50522 – BS 7430.

Our earthing specialists carry a number of critical pre-installation to commissioning procedures to ensure the highest standard delivery of our innovative earthing system. Our dedication and commitment to excellence in health and safety is unrivaled across the construction industry guaranteeing the safety of project staff and the public at all times.

Types of earthing arrangements commonly used are:

  • Copper-bond earth electrodes
  • Copper lattice earth mats
  • Copper ring tapes
  • Soil enhancement agents
  • Deep driven bore holes
  • Sub station earthing

Our Process

Our team of expert consultants and technicians work closely with engineers, architects, main contractors and project managers to ensure that a systematic and methodical approach is adhered to at all stages of a project, from initial project concept to final project handover.

Our process for the installation of an electrical earthing system is as follows:

Components of an Earthing System

As part of any electrical earthing system, there are three key components of the build-up as outlined below. It is essential that earthing systems are correctly designed and installed by specialist engineers who have the technical expertise, certifications and knowledge to install them to recognised industry standards to protect your entire building envelope.

LPI Earthing System

1

Test Point

Often a bimetallic connector which separates the aluminium lightning protection system from the copper earthing system. This point can also be used to disconnect the lightning protection system from the earthing system for testing.

2

Inspection Chamber

Houses the earth electrode and often an earth bar. At this location, we can again disconnect the earthing and lightning protection system and it is the point where the lightning protection system and earthing system are interlinked.

3

Earth Rod Electrode

Most commonly known as a Type A earthing arrangement, that safely dissipates a lightning current into the ground via a 2.4m earth rod.

4

Ring Conductor

Runs around the building perimeter and interlinks the down conductors via the inspection chamber. It usually consists of bare copper cable, buried at a minimum depth of 600mm.
